Join me in Northwest and North Iceland this September 17-26 for a spectacular 10-day tour to some of this gorgeous country's most special and remote landscapes. Our goal is to get off the “beaten path” of the Southern Ring Road that has exploded in popularity in recent years, and to spend some time deep in the countryside of the northern reaches of Iceland exploring the quiet Fjords and seacoasts.

My Iceland Adventure Workshops aim to provide a mixture of photography, travel adventure, cultural experiences, and photography tutorials. This trip has a max group size of four students, and we will travel together in our 4x4 rental car. On two occasions, we will spend two nights in the same lodging, with opportunity for image review and instruction in post-processing the images we have taken to date. We will always keep our eye to the weather and any possible Northern lights, with a list of attractions and locations to visit each morning and evening on the menu for each day.  Our goal is to have a maximum amount of fun, while visiting and photographing some spectacular landscapes, and learning to be better photographers along the way. With our small group, I will be able to provide ample one-on-one instruction at every shooting location to everyone so that we all improve our skills behind the camera and with Lightroom.

Day 1 - September 17th - Meet at the Keflavik International Airport outside of Reykjavik.

I will meet you at the International Arrivals hall at the Keflavik International airport, and bring you a short 15 minutes drive to our hotel for the first night, the 3-star Northern Light Inn, with the fabulous Max's Restaurant. Optional evening excursion to the Blue Lagoon to soak in the Geothermal waters (less than 5 minutes away - must be booked in advance). There is always a potential to shoot any Northern Lights at the Blue Lagoon if they appear and its clear out.

Day 2 - September 18th - Travel through Reykjavik to the town of Grundarfjörður (4 hours with stops)

After passing through Reykjavik and the Akranes area, we will travel to Grundarfjörður and arrive at our accommodations at the seaside Hotel Framnes around mid-afternoon. We will be dining at the lovely seaside restaurant Bjargarsteinn. We will travel five minutes outside of town to photograph the iconic Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall, with a good chance to either shoot the waterfall or the reflections of Kirkjufell mountain in the tidal flats, depending on the tide. If the skies clear for us, we will have a chance to return and shoot these majestic landscapes under any Northern Lights that might appear.

Day 3  - September 19th - Photograph Around Grundarfjörður / Olafsvik

We will travel around Grundarfjordur and photograph in Olafsvik or out around the Snaefellsness Peninsula, including the waterfalls at Kerlingarfoss, or the volcanic highlands of the Snaefellsjokull. There will be an optional post-processing workshop for a few hours in the dining room of the Hotel Framnes.

Day 4 - September 20th - Travel to Patreksfjörður (~4 hours)

We will wake up and catch one last sunrise at Kirkjufellsfoss, and then head out on the road to Patreksfjörður, about a 4 hour drive. This is the biggest town in the southern part of the WestFjords area. There are many attractions along the way, including the Fjords at Vattarnes, Flokalandur, and the beach at Rauðisandur.

Day 5 - September 21st - Travel to Isafjordur / Sudavik (~3 hours)

We will awake and shoot the sunrise at Patreksfjörður, perhaps at one of the many gorgeous beaches nearby such as Breiðavík Beach, and then slowly make our way to Súðavík (3 hours drive), with some time spent in Ísafjörður along the way. We'll spend the afternoon exploring this gorgeous town and its surroundings, including Valagil ravine and waterfall. We will have dinner in Ísafjörður at one of the lovely seafood cafes there such as Tjoruhusid, and stay the night at the seaside Fjord Guesthouse Bed and Breakfast.

Day 6 Travel to Stóra-Ásgeirsá Farmstay (~4.5 hours)

We awake on Day 6 and hope for good sunrise light on the Fjord at at Súðavík. Then, we travel to our accomodation at the Stóra-Ásgeirsá Farmstay, just past Laugarbakki. This will be a special experience, with the freshest farm food you‘ve ever had, and maybe even some live music from our host, Magnus.

Day 7 Travel to Akureyi (~2 hours)

On this day, we will travel to Akureyi, the “Capital of North Iceland”, which is the second largest urban area in Iceland, after Reykjavik. Based on the weather, we have the option of taking the inland route, through Akrahreppur and Bakki, or the long way around the Northern coast, through the quaint fishing villages of Hofsós and Ólafsfjörður. Akureyi has much to offer, including a magical combination of scenery and city life. We can shoot many things here, including the majestic nature scenery of the surrounding area, or the city lights at twilight. We will stay two nights at the Hotel Akureyi.

Day 8 - Photograph Around Akureyi

There are many options to photograph around Akureyi, including the spectacular Godafoss waterfall, or a short walk up the Sulur Mountain for a view over the city. We could also do a day trip to the pretty Lake Myvatn amd/or Asbyrgi Canyon. We could also have a mid-day image review, and post-processing tutorial session on this day in Akureyi.

Possible Extra: Cave Exploration Tour to Lofthellir Cave

Day 9 - Drive back to Reykjavik (5 hours)

We will wake up and head back to Reykjavik for one final night in the capital of Iceland. For those of you who don't wish to make the return trip, it is possible to fly IcelandAir Domestic to Keflavik and then transfer to Reykjavik for a night out on the town, or you could also just catch your flight home. For those that do choose to stay in Reykjavik, our accommodations are at the chic 3-star Icelandair Marina Hotel, and you are also welcome to extend your stay (not included) if you want to spend an extra day and night in this amazing Capital City.

Day 10 - Depart for Home

I will be heading to the airport on this day to return our vehicle and catch my flight, which is at 11 AM. I am happy to drop you, or you can arrange your own FlyBus transportation to the airport from the Hotel for around $35, not included.

The above schedule is jam-packed with the goal of getting in the most shooting opportunities and activities as possible in our time in the Westfjords. If you prefer a lighter less hectic schedule, you are free to skip any outing on the schedule - just let me know!

A Final Note about Iceland's Weather

As those of you who have been to Iceland before are intimately aware - the weather can be ferocious one minute, confusing the next, and then turn to placid - all in very little time. This is part of what makes it such an amazing location to photograph. While we will always wish for moody skies, colorful sunsets, and clear aurora-filled nights, we will most certainly be met with some clouds and rain or even possibly snow at some point. You will be expected to come prepared for any and all weather conditions. If the weather is wet or stormy, we will replace shooting sessions with post-processing sessions as desired. As always we will hope for the perfect mix of stormy clouds for dramatic landscapes but not too stormy so we can't go out, and we will keep our fingers crossed for clear skies at night under the Northern Lights.
